Fall Roof Maintenance Tips for Southern Willamette Valley Homeowners

Before the heavy rains make their permanent return, you should be asking: is your roof in shape to stand up to an Oregon winter? A stain on the ceiling or a shingle or two missing have put in an appearance? And are you clear on what needs to be done about it?

You would not be alone in wondering. River Roofing has put our experience to work for homeowners in the Southern Willamette Valley as of 1971. If those questions have given you cause to think, pick up the phone at (541) 782-7672 and we will explain the ins and outs of fall roof maintenance in this state.

For a roof here in the valley, fall is when it counts. The wet months that follow are no friend to your gutters, flashing or shingles. Something minor left to its own devices in October can be a major leak come January. Put some time into it now and you will have a drier, more comfortable home when the weather turns.

Why Fall is Important for Valley Roofs

From late fall well into spring the Southern Willamette Valley is subject to steady, soaking rain. It will exploit any weakness in a roof. Clogged gutters, old sealant and shingles on the loose are all ways water will get in. We would rather you see these things before they leave a mark on your ceiling than after. So to the people of Eugene, Cottage Grove, Junction City and environs we say make tending to your roof part of the fall schedule.

Gutters and Downspouts

Then there are the leaves. They are a roof’s bane this time of year. A clogged gutter means water will back up and find its way under the shingles or run down by the foundation. Before winter arrives do the following:

  • Clear out the debris, twigs and leaves
  • Make sure the downspouts are free flowing with a good flush
  • See that they are putting water at a distance from the foundation
  • Note any sagging or a fastener that has come loose
  • Check for granules from your asphalt shingles in the gutter

Do not overlook the last one. An accumulation of granules is indicative of a roof surface that is wearing out and warrants a second look.

Shingles and Flashing

With binoculars you can tell much of what is going on from the ground. Scan the roof for anything amiss. You may come across:

  • Shingles that are cracked, curled or gone altogether
  • Where the granules have worn off
  • Flashing around the chimney or vents that has been lifted or damaged
  • Some moss or algae, to be expected in the dampness
  • A sag in the roofline

Moss in particular is something to address. The climate in the valley suits it and if you let it be it will hold moisture to your shingles and cut their life short. Should you see a green carpet put in, take action.

A Look Inside

Trouble does not always present itself on the exterior. On a day without rain go up to the attic and check for:

  • Staining on the roof deck
  • Insulation that is matted or damp
  • Daylight where there ought to be none
  • The mustiness of moisture

It is a shame how often an attic leak is found only when there is damage to account for. An inspection in the fall is money well saved.

Put in Some Pruning

Winter storms in these parts have wind to go with the rain. Overhanging branches can be a nuisance, scraping the shingles or breaking off and sending debris your way. Trim them back to keep the gutters clear and mitigate the risk.
